Make-up Credits Now Available

Bayfield, Ontario, Canada, 18 February 2009

SYNOPSIS: Students completing a course within the past year with 35% or higher, can now take a make-up credit to reach a higher level of achievement. In addition to the final exam, students will only have to complete one-half of the assignments typically done in the regular course. This will mean that the student will be able to move through the make-up credit course much faster than usual.

Virtual High School (Ontario), the largest private online high school in Canada, announced today that it will be offering all 57 of its online courses to students as a make-up credit course option.

Typically students would take a make-up credit course for one of two reasons: (1) they failed the course (with a minimum mark of 35%) and now wish to obtain the credit, or (2) they passed the course but wish to improve their mark in the course.

Only students who meet the following criteria can retake a course as a make-up credit: (1) the course must have been completed previously, (2) the course must have been completed in the past 12 months, and (3) a mark of at least 35% must have been attained.

In the make-up credit course, students are responsible for the whole course content again but they will only have to submit one-half of the term evaluations typically submitted by students taking the course for the first time. Students will also have to write a final exam on all of the course content.

For more information regarding the make-up credit, please visit the Make-up Credits page or email the Registrar, Patricia Baker (Registrar@VirtualHighSchool.com).

22 August 2008: VHS Sponsors Ontario Kayaker

Alex Bogorin was born in 1992 in Sibiu, Romania and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1998. He attends St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in London, Ontario. Alex has been paddling for seven years and is now training with the Mississauga Canoe Club due to the loss of coaching, paddlers and water in London. He is extremely passionate about the sport and feels that he has what it takes to continue and succeed. Alex is a strong believer that performing mentally is more valuable than performing physically.

Alex is a member of the Ontario Provincial Canoe/Kayak Team and has consecutively won two Provincial Championships. He is ranked fifteenth in Canada for his age group (16) as of last year. He has attended two National Championships and is to attend the August 2008 National this year in Halifax. Alex has also been invited to train with the Ontario Provincial Team in a two week camp in Florida as well as a full week camp in North Bay this coming season.

Alex earned a silver medal at the Ontario Summer Games in Ottawa this year and will represent Canada at the Cone Marathon in Czech Republic this September. His short term goals include placing at the Nationals and finishing high school with an 85% average. His long term goals include making the Canadian National Team and going to University. Alex's ultimate dream is to one-day, race in the Olympics.

New: Calculus and Vectors - MCV4U

MCV4U screenshotVHS is expanding course offerings with the new MCV4U course for Ontario students. Faculties of Engineering at most ON Universities would require MCV4U as a prerequisite for admission.

The MCV4U course builds on students’ previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in three dimensional space; broaden their understanding of rates of change to include the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions; and apply these concepts and skills to the modelling of real-world relationships. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended for students who choose to pursue careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and some areas of business, including those students who will be required to take a university-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics course.

New Social Science Course - HSB4M

HSB4M screenshotVHS expands course offerings for Grade 12 students seeking to fulfill university entrance requirements. See Admission Guidelines and Programs of Study details concerning your particular university program.

This HSB4M course examines the theories and methodologies used in anthropology, psychology, and sociology to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour and their impact on society. Students will analyse cultural, social, and biological patterns in human societies, looking at the ways in which those patterns change over time. Students will also explore the ideas of classical and contemporary social theorists, and will apply those ideas to the analysis of contemporary trends. The prerequisite for the HSB4M course is any university, university/college, or college preparation course in social science and humanities, English, or Canadian and World Studies.

New Chemistry Course - SCH4U

SCH4U screenshotVHS is now offering the Chemistry, SCH4U course, which requires SCH3U as a prerequisite. You may register online for SCH4U and begin the course today! Major topics covered are organic chemistry; structure of matter; energy changes and rates; chemical systems and equilibrium; and electrochemistry.

The SCH4U labs required in this course will require the students to access online labs. We have chosen a third party supplier of labs because of their high quality and interactivity. Students are required to register with the lab supplier indicating to them that you are a student enrolled in Science 2D or Chemistry 4U with Virtual High School (Ontario) and that you require your PIN to access the labs. Your teacher has already chosen the necessary labs for SCH4U from all those available at the site.

VHS is pleased to announce the launch of AP Calculus!

AP Calculus screenshotWe have successfully completed the audit process by the Advanced Placement Audit Board and our AP Calculus AB has been given the approval to be credentialed as an AP course. The Advanced Placement program gives students the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school. Taking the end of course AP exam sends a powerful message to colleges and universities that you are ready for them, and this can enable you to gain admission, college credit, and placement into advanced courses.

What’s the difference between credit and placement? Some colleges and universities award “credit” for successful completion of AP exams. Others award “advanced placement” meaning you skip the introductory or first year course and enter the subject at a higher level. Still others use this information in awarding scholarships. Princeton University, for example, use AP grades to allow students to graduate in three and a half years, and to enter upper level courses.

The AP course requirements are the same across Canada and the United States and are designed by teams of college professors. As well, college faculty participates in the scoring of the AP Exam that you will take at the end of your course comparing you to college level students and verifying your mastery of college level curriculum. The curriculum, however, is written by the staff of each school (in our case by Mr. Stewart) and this is what is audited and granted audit approval. So, good at math? Consider enrolling in AP Calculus today!

New Math Course - MHF4U

VHS is now offering the new Advanced Functions, MHF4U course! It will require either MCR3U or MCT4C or MCB4U or MCF3M (if completed before Sept 2006) as its prerequisite. The MHF4U or MCB4U or MCR3U (if completed before Sept 2006) will be the prerequisites for the new Calculus and Vectors, MCV4U. MHF4U is also a corequisite so may be taken concurrently with MCV4U. You may register online for the MHF4U and begin the course immediately. MCV4U will be available at VHS some time in February.

The MHF4U course extends students' experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; develop techniques for combining functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students taking the Calculus and Vectors course as a prerequisite for a university program and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs.
