According to distance education specialists, our current online courses are on the leading edge of elearning! Our courses engage the learner at many different levels resulting in the high level of student completions being experienced by our students. Students taking our online courses consistently report that our etexts, communication and other course tools are simply the best that exist!
As a Registered Private School in Ontario, we have to consistently exceed the needs of our students as we provide quality online education. And this starts with the teacher. There is no substitute for quality courses by top-notch teachers. Great online courses do not arise from poor teaching philosophy. When one of our students Nalenee reported, "To tell you the truth, you're even better than some of my day school teachers. It is surprising that you are so helpful.", she was reflecting honestly about our online teacher. We strive to provide teachers of distinction so that the student succeeds.

 Stephen Baker
B.Sc., B.Ed. from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Stephen taught in a small fishing village in Newfoundland for 13 years and then moved to Ontario teaching in several high schools in Ontario and assuming the role of Science Department Headship as well as Team Leader in Mathematics, Science and Computer Studies. "There is no better occupation in the world than teaching a class of students. The energy in that class, if harnessed, can move mountains! I consider myself honoured to have had the opportunity for almost 3 decades to tap into that energy flow and influence the lives of highschool students."
These days most of my time is spent trying to replicate the positive classroom experiences I have had into an online environment. Nowadays, I work with great teachers and from them I am learning so much as we move forward in the creation of our Virtual High School. I also get to work with my four children, who have roles in creating the software used to run our online courses - Desire2Learn, and that is neat!" Stephen is an avid philatelist, enjoys gardening and fly-fishing salmon and in recent memory has also spent a lot of time scuba diving and playing badminton and squash. He also rides a Triumph Thunderbird. |

School, thrives on challenge and change. After 26 years in public education
as a teacher, learning co-ordinator, vice-principal and principal, she is
delighted to find herself helping to lead a school where excellence and
innovation are not the exception but the rule. Her perspective on education has been developed while working at 10 schools and in 4 different school boards and by traveling throughout the province as a curriculum and staff development leader.
What a joy it is for her to be able to work from home where her husband and six sons keep her busy at horse barns, ball diamonds and arenas. In her spare time, she enjoys producing and directing community theatre for children. The "icing on her cake" is the opportunity to once again work alongside her longtime colleague, Steve Baker. |

 Felicia Palage
Felicia has her B.Sc. (Physics) and B.Ed from the University of Babes-Bolyai of Cluj in Romania. She has taught high school Physics for 16 years and has been a science, physics and mathematics curriculum writer and teacher with VHS for a number of years. "I was fascinated by the idea of writing courses for e-learning environment because it was a unique opportunity to present Physics in a new and more attractive way. Diagrams, animations and video clips inserted in lessons take students closer to the essence of the physical phenomena."
"In online courses, students enjoy the experiments that they can make by themselves; in this way they develop their experimental skills. At the same time, they can watch the video / animation / simulation of experiments. As an on-line teacher, it is really interesting to work with students with different ages and backgrounds but all driven by the same desire to learn more about Physics."

 Ken Stewart
Ken has been with VHS for several years, writing 4 of our math courses and assuming the duties of the math department head. He has an honours BSc in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics from the University of Toronto and a BEd from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Over the past year, he has been actively editing our mathematics courses in grades 9 and 10 to align them with the new curriculum and is currently looking at the changes that will be needed in our senior courses in mathematics.
Ken has been teaching at the same school for the past 18 years and brings all of this experience to the students in his courses at VHS. "I really enjoy working with my on-line students. They are self motivated and are developing great time management skills as they work through their on-line courses, a skill that too often is overlooked in education. I have been impressed at their depth of knowledge and their level of enthusiasm as they work through the material." Ken stays active coaching his son's hockey team, his daughter's basketball team and enjoys reading and playing golf in his spare time.

 Ken Turner
It has been my point of view that when you create learning experiences for young people, your goals are to inspire students to love learning and to challenge them to go beyond what they consider to be their limitations. Students taking my courses online will quickly realize that I care about what I do and that my standard for excellence is demanding. |

 John Smallwood
You may have noticed that Mr. Smallwood is the only one among the esteemed faculty members to have all of the appendages we associate with most human beings. While the other instructors have large brains and wisdom beyond their years, John Smallwood has sacrificed these assets for a working torso and limbs that allow him to hike, run, kayak, run, bike, run and run.
He has been doing these activities for many years, for so many years, in fact, that many have labelled him an obsessive-compulsive, and that may, in fact, be partially true, but only partially true, because his true loves are teaching and writing about literature.
To change person, I have taught for more than thirty-five years and consider teaching to be one of life's greatest pleasures and privileges. After teaching at a local high school for thirty years, and after developing an award winning Canadian literature course with Mr. Baker, our principal, I taught the course on-line, and the die was cast. A decade later I am still developing courses and meeting many wonderful scholars from all corners of the world. The size of the classroom has grown exponentially as have the opportunities for students. It is exciting to be at the forefront of such changes.
I have also taught at the University of Western Ontario for the past six years in the Writing Department and have developed courses for university students in distance education and technical writing. Work at the university level is particularly rewarding. It allows me to anticipate the needs of graduating students at the secondary level as they prepare for post-secondary study.

 Sarah Hemingway
Sarah Hemingway began her academic career at home, like many of the online students at Virtual High School. Being home-schooled through elementary school planted the seeds of independence and determination, and now she helps her independent and determined online students succeed in their Grade 9 Science and Biology courses. Sarah was educated at the University of Waterloo and Redeemer University College. She taught high school Science, Biology, Physics and Math in a 'brick and mortar school' until her maternity leave, and now enjoys teaching online from the comforts of her home office.
Sarah wrote the SNC1D Science course and was Virtual High School's second online teacher. Sarah feels as though she's been online teaching so long it's just part of her – she can't imagine life without logging in to Virtual High School to see what her students have for her to mark or respond to. |

 Anne Volpe
My work in the field of online learning spans seven years and includes course development, online tutoring, online seminar presentations as well as teaching a variety of Ontario secondary school Mathematics courses.
My two undergraduate degrees are in the areas of mathematics/ psychology (B.A.) and education (B.Ed.). During my Master's degree I focussed on counselling psychology (M.Sc.).
Studying in these areas led to a rich and fulfilling teaching career in the areas of guidance and mathematics. I am presently close to completion of a Master's in Distance Education through Canada's own Athabasca University.
I have learned a great deal through my online teaching experience. There is much more opportunity to do individualized teaching in this environment. I also find students very willing to take responsibility for their learning and work with me on achieving their academic goals.

 Terry Hsia
Terry Hsia graduated from UC Berkeley with both her BA in psychology and her MA in education. Mrs. Hsia has been teaching science for the past 8 years at local public high schools in California. She is currently teaching online science courses for a charter school in California. She truly believes traditional brick and mortar schools do not meet the needs of all students.
"Online high schools can be a great alternative to those students that don't excel in traditional schools. I'm so passionate about online education that I quit teaching at a brick and mortar school so I can devote all my time and energy into online education!" |
|
 Ed Sommerville
Officially I hung up my chalk in 2001. But I did so in part to try my hand at online as opposed to classroom teaching. So far I have not regretted that decision as I have found creative outlets as a writer and instructor in four quite different online educational ventures - the latest and greatest, of course - becoming a teacher and course developer for the Virtual High School.

 Dawn Ruddick
Dawn Ruddick has eight years experience and a Masters Degree in Education. Her most meaningful time was two years teaching and training teachers through a voluntary organisation in Northern Namibia. Now with two young sons, if it weren't for Virtual High School, her only contact with education would be trying to teach her children to pick their toys off the floor.
She is excited to be teaching the Healthy Active Living course for the Virtual High School. It was said by some that teaching this course online was not possible, but she is proud to have developed a course that allows flexibility and interaction, freedom and connection.

 Susana Martinez
Independent, self-motivated, technology savvy, and disciplined are some words to describe students within our Virtual High School community. I've been teaching the Grade 9 Academic English course for 2 years, and in that time period I have had the privilege to work with a variety of multicultural, determined, talented and energetic group of students. I earned my B.A. of Social Science and B. Ed at the University of Ottawa.
In addition to being a VHS teacher, I'm also a full time adult educator, in a catholic high school in Ottawa, ON. I teach in an alternative work setting and work with many at-risk students that have returned to upgrade their high school credits to successfully attend a post secondary institution or to complete their High School Diploma.
Virtual High School, as an online virtual community, provides me with a practical method to assist, coach and guide my students' learning, in a developed, established automated environment. I look forward to my continued success with VHS and our exemplary VHS students.

 Murray Smith
Murray has been involved in education for the last 31 years as a teacher of Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science; as an administrator and as a volunteer math tutor at an adult aboriginal school. He attended the University of Waterloo where he earned his Honours BSc, MSc and PhD in Physical Chemistry. His BEd came from UWO. He helped create the Computers in the Classroom Specialist program for teacher additional qualification. Murray feels that online courses challenge both students and teachers.
Teachers must make the best use of available software and hardware to provide challenging courses. Students must develop and use critical organizational and time management skills to ensure their timely and successful course completion. The abilities to work independently and to seek out resources are critical and will be invaluable in their future years.
Murray is married to a nurse and artist (same person) and has 3 children, one a secondary school teacher, one currently in the middle of a PhD program at McMaster University and the third is a financial advisor at a bank nestled in the heart of British Columbia's ski country. In his spare time Murray is involved with home renovations, gardening, Sudoku, chasing active grandchildren and reading SF and mystery stories.

 Sherrie Bayne
I have been working for VHS since January 2007 writing and teaching science curriculum. I completed a Mathematics degree at Brock University and have been teaching math and Science at a private school. Being involved in the guidance program at a brick and mortar school has allowed me to work one on one with students and encourage them to use their abilities to their greatest potential.
Taking care of my active one-year old keeps me busy when I'm not in the classroom. |

 Heli Kich
Since retiring after 31 years of teaching (physical/health education and co-operative/guidance education) in a brick and mortar school system, I have come to realize that I can't quite give up my previous role an an educator. Thank goodness for technology! People assume that particular courses such as physical and health education courses can't be taught using e-learning. Not willing to give up the flexibility to pursue personal interests that retirement allows, I was very excited to have found a tool to teach the "Health for Life" course from the comforts of my home.
I practice what the course promotes - healthy eating and active living. I'm an avid golfer, enjoy working out, hiking, gardening, and trying out new "healthy" recipes on family and friends. Even vacation destinations must provide amenities for keeping physically active! My interest in promoting healthy habits in youth reaches into the community - from coaching volleyball, track & field, and swimming, volunteering countless hours in administrative roles with a swim club and soccer organization to supporting and encouraging my daughter's goal of achieving a university degree while on a swim scholarship in the U.S. Presently, I deliver the Ontario Volleyball Association's "Spikes" program to elementary school students and clinics to teachers and coaches in southwestern Ontario.
I am enthusiastic about the opportunities for meaningful interaction between teacher and learner and learner and learner through this virtual learning course. I hope that students experience an engaging and fun way to learn about "healthy living".

 Denise Tremblay
Denise Tremblay a native French-Canadian from Baie-Comeau, Québec, has enjoyed teaching French at many levels and in a variety of settings, from French Immersion, Francophone schools and to middle school Core French. She has been privileged to lead workshops in Reading and Technology for classroom teachers.
Her real passion as a teacher, though, is to try diverse ways of teaching French and watching her students realize that "OUI" they can learn a second language and gain confidence. Mme Tremblay has also a Masters in Education in sociolinguistic from the University of Toronto. Her research is focused on the future of French Immersion program in Ontario and how students pick-up different French accent as they move along in their program. Stephen van Breda
Stephen comes to VHS with a B.A., a B.Ed, 5 years of teaching experience, and a great deal of excitement to be involved with this online educational institution. In his physical classroom, he has endeavoured to create an online experience by providing his students and parents with an interactive communication, homework, and resource blog. Currently, he is teaching three Introduction to Business courses, and is enjoying the opportunity they are providing him to see how students from such diverse background approach subjects they find interesting.
Stephen believes that the most learning occurs when a student is self-motivated, and is given the opportunity to learn at his or her own pace. The Virtual High School provides just this advantage; the instructors are available readily through email and pages to explain concepts that are providing students difficulty, and the lack of hard deadlines takes the pressure off students to work through the material at a rate they find most comfortable and educative.
|
 Dan Strutt
Dan has taught and trained teachers from the wild coasts of Northeast England to the arid deserts of Namibia, and from the cosmopolitan European cities of Brighton and Madrid, to a remote village in Zambia, where he had to travel 8 hours on mud roads on the back of a truck just to pick up his salary.
He now lives in Wortley Village in London, Ontario with his wife and two young sons, and feels privileged to be working with Virtual High School, where students are put in total control of their learning, without losing any of the personal touch and interaction vital to education.
Often he feels excited by the vast opportunities afforded education by technology, but usually he is interrupted by a battle over a small wooden train, and forced into a trip to the park. It's not a bad balance...

Sharlene McHolm
Sharlene McHolm comes to VHS bringing a wide variety of educational experiences both as a teacher and a learner. Her teaching experiences in Mexico, in prison schools and in traditional high schools, has effectively taught her to help students meet their individual potential. As a learner, Sharlene believes in continuously challenging oneself. She has three university degrees and a college diploma and has been “in school” continuously since kindergarten (and let me tell you that is a long time!).
A true geographer and social scientist, Sharlene has back-packed around the world -- learning from every walk of life. Like all VHS students, Sharlene loves to use technology and adores the time flexibility the VHS online environment affords. Class awaits, whenever you are ready!

Sarah Cooper
I am excited to be teaching History and English courses at VHS. I currently teach sections of ENG3U, CHI4U, CHW3M, and CHC2 Academic and Applied streams. After graduating from the Queen's University Concurrent Education program in 2001, I taught for one year in England before returning to do a MA in History at University of Toronto. I then spent four wonderful years teaching History to grades 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 at the National Ballet School in Toronto, during which time I completed an Honours Specialist AQ in History.
In my teaching of History, I enjoy the challenges of making the past relevant and interesting to students, as well as helping them develop the strong research, analytical and writing skills they will require in their careers, whatever paths they choose. During the past year I have been leading a semi-nomadic existence following my husband to various academic posts, and have been keeping busy working with undergraduates at the Princeton University Writing Centre, and teaching ESL to adults in Toronto, in addition to my VHS courses. In my spare time, I love reading, photography and travelling the world- which may explain why sometimes my students will see me online at strange hours of the day!
